Sec 2 WB 9.2 Sample Answer

Qn 1b)
Untreated sewage produced by households
Untreated sewage produced by industries
Oil from oil tanker accidents/oil spill from vessels
Rubbish thrown directly into a water bodies

Qn 1c)
When untreated sewage is released into rivers/lakes, these water bodies become polluted because sewage contains human waste, detergents and chemicals which can be harmful if consumed.
Sewage that is treated may still contain non-biodegradable substances such as detergents. These substances remain in the water and cause water pollution.

Qn 2a)
A: People may use polluted water from the river or other water bodies for cooking and drinking.
B: People may consume contaminated seafood which comes from a polluted river or the sea.
C: People may come into contact with polluted water when they bathe or swim in a polluted river or the sea.

Qn 2b)
When we consume contaminated seafood from polluted water, the poisons that accumulate in the bodies of fish and shellfish are passed on to us. This may make us ill.
When we drink contaminated water, we may suffer from diseases such as cholera and typhoid.

Qn 2c)
The oil prevents oxygen from reaching fish in the sea, thus killing them. This will reduce the supply of fresh fish, hence affecting the fishing industry negatively.

Sec 2 Water Pollution Worksheet

I know not all the classes have handed this up for marking but I don't want keep the rest of you waiting. So here goes!...

Some students were put off (?) or frightened off by the word summarise. I'm not teaching you English so when I say summarise, I'm really asking you to pick out the damages and effects from the passage. It's really not a tough question at all!
Also, please be careful not to include the method of cleaning in your answer because it's not required.

Sample answer:
About 63,000 tonnes of the oil is lost from the oil spill. The toxicity of the oil is higher than the oil spilled from Valdez because the temperature of the sea is higher.
Marine life will be badly affected by the pollution for the next 10 years/ decade.
Plankton, fish eggs and crustaceans will be poisoned by the toxic chemicals. This will also can cancer to other fish and other predators (animals higher in the food chain)
More than 1000 beaches in Spain and France, and the local fishing industry were destroyed.
Cleaning up this oil spill comes with a really high price - $100million for the oil on the surface of the sea, and $2 billion just to clean up the Galician coast.

1st Qn:
Most would say the punishment is not too strict. But you must remember to explain why (it's not strict.)
Some reasons offered by your schoolmates include:
- he is supposed to be vigiliant and make sure the pesticide does not leak.
- he would only learn his lesson if it's a painful one.
- he caused the death of the fishes and time is needed to recolonise the river again.
- he could have also triggered a chain reaction, sending even more pollution down into River Lyd. (I really like this answer from ShuHeng, 2B)

2nd Qn:
This is a simple explanation question. You can lift the answer from the passage if you can't rewrite it in your own words.
Sample answer:
The sheep were held in a concrete yard after the dipping. Unfortunately, there were cracks in the concrete and the pesticide escaped into the brook through (via) the farm's surface water drainage system. The brook was then polluted by the toxic chemicals.

3rd Qn:
This is a straight forward descriptive question. In fact, if you read the question again, I'm only asking for the answers which are found in the passage. But I'm giving you a few more possible effects I've gathered from you schoolmates.

Sample answer:
- Rotting fishes will lead to more water pollution issue.
- The toxic kills the fishes and micro-organisms in the water.
- People or other creatures who consume the poisoned fish might also fall ill.
- The effected stretch of water/river/brook will need months or even years to be recolonised by the fish again. (i.e. it will take months/years before the fish is able to live there again.)

Indonesia, Jakarta (Bekasi is actually one of the cities in east Jakarta. The news was reported from this city) Citarum River, however, flows through West Java.

3rd Qn:
I know the question required you to list the uses, but some of the answers I've read are really too skimpy. You'll need to give more details, esp. when they're already found in the passage.
Sample answer:
It provides 80% of household water for Jakarta's 14 million people, irrigates farms that supply 5% of Indonesia's rice farms. It is also the source of water for more than 200 factories. Villages living along the bank also uses the Citarum River to wash their clothes, themselves and their children.

It's really pointless for us to gather knowledge without taking time to reflect. So I was very serious when I included this space for you to write your reflection. I enjoyed reading some of your thoughts and feelings, wrt this pollution issue, and was disappointed each time I see a blank page.

Anyway, I felt really sad when I read about Sutri's lifestyle. I don't think she has much choices as far as water supply is concern. And you know, if I am living in her village I will be showing Samantha with the same toxic water too. And which loving mother would want that for her children? And Sutri represents millions of others using this river.
I think the least we can all do is to be really appreciative and thankful that we have clean, safe water for consumption. Be thankful and you'll be a much happier person.

Waste from an infected person is collected in an underground septic tank. The bacteria from the waste might escape from the cracks of the tank, and drained in the soil underground.
As it follows the flow of underground water, bacteria might enter the well and pollute the well water.
Infected children who play in the river might also pollute it. In the same manner, river water is connected to the underground water. Bacteria will be spread into the well water through underground water movement.
When the well water is infected, all who used it will become infected.

This is a practise for you to write out explanation.
Generally not well attempted. Perhaps most of you need more time to think through your explanation. You need to remember that you have an audience reading your explanation, and your job is to help them understand you.
I'm offering you 3 sample answers so that you've an idea of what was expected.

Sample Answer:
Intensive Farming - Farmers engaged in intensive farming tend to use chemical fertilisers and pesticides excessively. These chemicals either run off into the river/lake/waterbody when it rains, or they seep underground and pollute the underground water.

Oil Spill - Oil spill can happen when the hull of an oil tanker is torn by sharp rocks or collides with another ship. The oil carried by the tanker which is really toxic, will then spill into the sea and pollute it.

Industrial Waste - Industries discharge untreated chemical waste into the rivers/seas because these places can be easily available, and the water will wash the waste away from the factories. Some of these chemicals are either toxic or non-biodegradable. They will remain in the water system and harm all living organisms that come in contact with them. These will include the aquatic plants and also plants found along the water ways, water creatures, animals and human who use the river as a water source.
